MODERNIZATION OF SPECIAL SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS INDIA

Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, is actively integrating technology to modernize schools and universities, with the goal of enhancing the capabilities of special institutions where technological resources are lacking and existing universities face growth challenges.
Over 40 plus schools and universities have undergone modernization through the implementation of assistive technology, transforming the learning environment for students with disabilities. In a significant milestone, 26 schools for the blind across India have been equipped with computer labs and screen-reading software, enabling visually impaired students to access digital resources independently. Signify CSR played a crucial role in supporting the setup of the “Jagmag Pathshala” initiative, this initiative of Signify continues this Financial Year as well modernizing 16 more blind schools with accessible computer labs. while Future Generali contributed to establishing computer labs in five blind schools in Madhya Pradesh in 2023.
Furthermore, Samarthanam through ATA Labs extended their support to university beneficiaries, including Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) in Lucknow, by supporting the computer lab set up through 20 computers loaded with Jaws screen reading software & 4 Kibo OCR devices, which enhance accessibility for visually impaired students. Additionally, Jagadguru Ramabadracharya Divyang State University (JRDSU) Chitrakoot received 30 computers and 4 KIBO OCR Devices, further boosting their technological infrastructure. Intellectual Disability (ID) schools benefited from receiving 48 Tablets loaded with “AVAZ” devices, which are augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) Technology, as well as teacher capacity-building training done to special schools, universities on the use of Assistive Technologies.
The beneficiaries of these initiatives (since 2022) are over 32 Blind Schools, 5 ID Schools & 3 universities, including DSMNRU, JRDSU, and Bharathidasan University, have significantly enhanced their capacity to provide accessible education and empower students with disabilities, setting a benchmark for inclusive education in India.
