Walkathon is an annual feature organised by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled on a specific theme to commemorate the World Disability Day. It is a public event organised to mainly involve people across the country and spread awareness on a common cause. Walkathon is organised at places across India, where Samarthanam has its presence. It is perceived as an event made to create awareness and more importantly call for concerted action.
The 12th Walkathon is initiated to support the blind cricketers across the globe. With the theme, ’I support blind cricket... Do you?’ the 12th walkathon will be organized on 10thDecember 2016 at Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium, Jayanagar 3rd Block, Bengaluru. The objective of the walkathon is to support the game of cricket for the visually impaired and promote the upcoming T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament scheduled to take place from 28th January to 12th February 2017 in India. It is an effort to empower the blind cricketers across the globe and initiate public engagement into meaningful action.
By supporting Walkathon and Blind Cricket the players are provided with a platform to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, boosting confidence and self-sufficiency. It also aids in sensitizing public about the opportunities available for the visually impaired in cricket. People would also have a clear understanding on the needs of the visually impaired and act towards their empowerment. The funds garnered from Walkathon 2016 will be utilized for the upcoming T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament, which would further motivate the blind cricketers across the globe.
